MARYAM NAWAZ’S IMPRESSIVE AND HOLLOW SPEECH

I am not a PTI supporter. I like Imran Khan as a cricket icon and a great philanthropist but I do not agree with his politics.

George Orwell writes in his book ‘Why I write,’ “Political language is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectful, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.”

One must give credit to Maryam Nawaz Sharif for her well-rehearsed speech following her appearance in front of the JIT on Wednesday (July 5th). Under the scorching sun, she did not seem to break a sweat during the entire speech.

It appears that she got a lot of attention and may even win more favorable outlook, especially among women. But there were at least five points during her speech when it felt like she was making a fool out of all of us by appearing to be emotional and earnest while saying things that lacked substance and making false claims.

– I am here today as Pakistan’s daughter, as a daughter of the sitting Prime Minister and as the daughter of the man who always adhered to the law and the constitution.

Really, “the daughter of the man who always adhered to the law and the constitution” did she forget about the attack on the Supreme Court in 1997 ordered by Nawaz Sharif and carried out by the PML-N party workers?

– Today, I have paid the debt that wasn’t mine.

It seems like a noble gesture if the debt belonged to some poor fellow. But it wasn’t. Whose debt she was talking about?

– All the big projects whether it is the Motorway, or the CPEC or the electricity projects, in Pakistan, carry the banner of PML-N and Nawaz Sharif and no one can accuse him of corruption for a single penny and nothing could be more prideful for a family, a PM and a country.

You must be forgetting Pakistan’s win against India in Champions Trophy, sister.

– A families private business should not be brought into question.

OK, as long as you pay your taxes and do not use your office for financial gains. But wait, you do not pay your taxes and you do use your office for financial gains.

– Because we are the rulers, and we are the ruling family so our accountability will be very tough in God’s court.

Is that your subtle way of saying that Pakistanis should give up on any hopes of everyone in the country including the ruling families to be held accountable?

She must have realized that she has gone too far because then she told us something we could use to feel better about:

– This is the fifth time we have to face accountability. It is helpful for us because what we were supposed to deal with in afterlife we are facing some of it here.
